What is GLOBE?

The GLOBE Exercise is a multi-day virtual collaboration exercise that has been organized every semester since 2013 by a group of students from the International Relations and Management B.A. programme at the Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule. The GLOBE Exercise offers a hybrid and hands-on learning environment by simulating a humanitarian crisis and training inter-organizational crisis management capacities of the participants.

Besides the well established GLOBE Exercise, the new GLOBE Tabletop Exercise as a preparation exercise and the InSight, an intelligence challenge, will be offered, starting from the winter semester 2023/24. Anyone interested from any academic or professional background is welcome to join the various GLOBE Exercises.

The GLOBE Family is collaborating with a range of appreciated and renowned experts from diverse fields, including researchers, humanitarian workers, civil-military cooperation practitioners and business professionals. Participants can count on expert talks offering valuable insights into real-world trends and experiences.

The GLOBE Family

  • The GLOBE Exercise is a multi-day virtual collaboration exercise, organized and implemented by students from the OTH Regensburg and our international partners, including the international master’s program in Security, Intelligence, and Strategic Studies (IMSISS) at the University of Glasgow, Dublin City University, University of Trento, and Charles University.

During the exercise, a United Nations Mission is simulated and the participants deal with a humanitarian crisis scenario. In two teams, representing the country office and the headquarters, they work together in a hybrid setting to coordinate the simulated crisis. In different roles and settings, the teams are required to solve tasks together. The exercise challenges the participants to dive into complex and potential real-life scenarios and by that trains their skills in crisis management, stress resilience, and responsiveness.

  • GLOBE Tabletop is a hands-on workshop designed to offer students practical insights and background knowledge in the work of the United Nations and its respective mandates. Through various teamwork exercises and expert talks, a shared learning atmosphere is created to prepare students outside of a simulation context for the GLOBE and their future careers. Participants develop their collaborative skills and learn about management processes and organizational structures. An important element is the use of room-sized maps to analyze the situation, which gives the exercise its name.

Students who were successfully engaged in the GLOBE Tabletop Exercise are very well-equipped to participate in the GLOBE Exercise, where their skills and new knowledge can be applied and practiced.

  • Premiering in January 2024 InSight joins as an intelligence challenge to the GLOBE Family. The InSight (Intelligence for Strategic Impact of Global Hot Topics) is a challenge designed for students and young professionals interested in geostrategic matters and intelligence topics. In interdisciplinary and international teams, the participants compete against each other by analyzing current geostrategic issues and real-world trends with the help of Structured Analytic Techniques (SATs). They gain a deeper knowledge of strategic intelligence and key trends shaping the upcoming years. The InSight Challenge allows its participants to take their methodological competencies, critical thinking as well as analytical skills to the next level while connecting with students from other study programs and universities.
